We never know what GW2 might have for instances. 2000 people in your district? Bye Bye 56k.

Well, I believe that by 2009 all countries and areas of the planet will have access to broadband connections, and -well, almost- everyone will be able to afford it. I know it's easy to say that, but the last years evolution is just too fast. I hope that you and anyone who needs/wants DSL will have it soon.

You'd better start worrying if your computer wil be able to play GW2. Lot's of power will be needed for games realised in '09

Not necessarily. I've played an MMOFPS (PlanetSide) on ISDN dialup. They have about 150 players per instance, iirc, and it was playable, although an FPS requires a much higher accuracy to be playable, i.e. higher "refresh rate", i.e. more bandwidth per player. I'd guess that the refresh rate for an FPS game must be at least 3-5 times as high as as for an RPG.

Anyway ... one of the strong selling points of GW(1) has always been the fact that it runs very well on rather old PCs. For example, it was praised in GameSpot's "Great Games that don't require Great Hardware" special. This allows ANet to expand into markets where people cannot afford top-notch hardware, like Eastern Europe, China, etc. I guess that ANet will stick to this strategy: Low minimum hardware requirement, and low bandwidth requirement. It's good for their sales. ANet aren't id-soft.

Myself, I'm running GW on a PC that is more than 3 years old, and I don't see the need to buy a new one simply because GW is running very smooth on it, yet looks beautiful.

I find it amazing that in this day and age people still use dial-up.

Where I am, dialup is cheap and I get unlimited downloads (though 4 hour cut-offs, which is fine with my limited online time). I very rarely download anything big, so an expensive high-speed connection is unnecessary. GW is the only online game I play at the moment, and it runs wonderfully on dialup.

The only problems are the time it takes to download updates and when I enter (some) new areas for the first time.

GW2? I don't know if I'll buy it at all yet... but if it can't run on dialup then it's a definite no.

As Tetris L stated, ANet has gone after the markets that other big name games have ignored. Gamers, both USA and abroad, who don't have the disposable income to PtP or buy top-line computers or who can't get broadband connections.

I think they will try to keep that market area with GW2.

I play with several that have dialup. I have dialup. DSL and Cable does not reach 5 miles out of town. Maybe in 2 years, but I am not holding my breath. Our small town phone company won't rent access to any DSL providers, and only supplies DSL to people within 3 miles of their office. I live 6 miles from the office. Even if the local DSL did reach out here, I doubt I would be willing to pay $59.99 a month for it. (Small town monopoly.) Dialup is $19.99 a month, attached to the phone bill.

I couldn't play the second generation the online game I played before because I was on dialup. If in 2 years, I am in the same boat, I will play what is available.

As of this point we don't know enough about GW2 to be able to know/state whether it will run fine on dialup. As we don't know the answer, any comments on it are speculation, thus...
